Weight Loss Surgery Saves Lives

Dr. Sanjay Gupta reported on CNN this morning his take on the new Lancet journal study that shows that weight loss surgery saves lives.  Most significant from the Lancet study is that there is a 40% decrease in death rates among people who have had weight loss surgery, showing that weight loss surgery saves lives by improving the health of the patient. Of particular note is a decrease in the number of deaths from cancer and heart disease.

He expressed surprise to learn that more than 200,000 weight loss surgeries were done in the United States this year. This number includes gastric bypass surgery as well as lap band and other versions of the surgery and that weight loss surgeries around the world have quadrupled.
